Lyft Urban Solutions’s Bike sharing service Now in Rio de Janeiro!
After taking Recife and São Paulo by storm, and in the wake of the largest Carnaval in the world, Lyft Urban Solutions is gearing up to launch yet another brand new bike sharing service today in the Cidade Maravilhosa. Jointly orchestrated with Itaú Unibanco, tembici. and the city of Rio de Janeiro, this latest green tech rollout represents the most important milestone of an unprecedented nationwide urban mobility initiative.
A total of 2,600 brand new Lyft Urban Solutions bikes will be spread across the city and made accessible to locals and tourists alike through 260 solar-powered stations. Offering a multitude of access options such as a mobile application and credit card payments directly at the stations, the new system will be exceptionally accessible and convenient for all types of riders. Intercity memberships will allow registered citizens to access any of the tembici. operated systems across the county, and the 50k+ previous members will easily be migrated to the new system. Within this year, a fleet of over 9,000 Lyft Urban Solutions bikes will be rolling in the streets of Brazil as part of the company’s world-leading and ever-growing portfolio.
“This countrywide network makeover is yet another testament to the unrivalled value of smart docking systems which have proven time and again to be an organized, efficient and sustainable way to complement existing urban mobility options. At Lyft Urban Solutions, we believe that shared infrastructure should be intelligently integrated into a city’s transportation plan and remain an asset to its population, rather than being improvised and becoming a burden, which has been the case for many dockless systems around the world.”
– Luc Sabbatini, CEO, Lyft Urban Solutions
A Bike FIT for Brazilians
The bright orange version of the FIT bike, the lightest member of Lyft Urban Solutions’s family of our bike sharing service, provides an optimal riding experience for all types of cyclists and is fully adapted to the daily reality of this marvellous city. The unprecedented agility and durability of the bikes will also ensure overall network sustainability, as South America’s premier tourist destination begins to include the FIT in its daily commute. Lyft Urban Solutions’s bikes have survived blizzards in Chicago and tropical rains in Hawaii and they are ready to take on Rio’s unique topography.
The Rio of Tomorrow
So far, the cities of Recife and São Paulo have had the chance to experience the new Lyft Urban Solutions system and bikes and their response has been beyond positive; Brazilians are delighted to welcome efficient, reliable, proven and safe bike sharing technology into their daily commute.
In this next phase of the nationwide urban mobility scheme, global icons such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, as well as the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema will be better served through user-friendly technology and sustainable infrastructure. The city’s existing cycling path network will also serve as a great complement to the new bike sharing system and the 50+ km of coastline it covers.
As flamboyant and hip as it may already be, Rio de Janeiro will now be taking another step forward as it joins the ranks of some of the world’s most intelligent cities through this state of the art urban mobility rollout.
