Last week marked another successful Bike to Work Week, that exciting time of year when many people dust off their winter-stored bicycles and head back into the fresh air. For bikeshare users, however, no dusting was necessary as they simply grabbed a ready-to-ride option from their local station. Despite some rainy weather across the east coast and midwest, Lyft Urban Solutions witnessed record-breaking ridership numbers that highlight cycling's growing popularity as a sustainable transportation option.

Record-Breaking Ridership

The data from this year's Bike to Work Week reveals impressive growth across the six major cities in which Lyft operates in the US:

  • Overall ridership increased by 20% year-over-year nationwide
  • San Francisco’s Bay Wheels program saw a remarkable 30% increase in trips
  • Washington D.C.’s Capital Bikeshare experienced an even more impressive 33% growth
  • New York City's Citi Bike program hit a milestone with over 1 million rides during the week—their highest Bike to Work Week to-date

These numbers are particularly noteworthy considering the less-than-ideal weather conditions many cyclists faced during some of the days in New York, Boston, and Chicago. The determination to ride despite the rain speaks volumes about the growing commitment to sustainable transportation options and suggests that investments in protected bike lanes and ebikes yields significant returns.

The Bay Area's Bike to Wherever Renaissance

The San Francisco Bay Area deserves special recognition, having achieved an extraordinary 69% ridership growth over the past two years during bike to wherever week. This tremendous increase can be attributed to several factors. Return-to-office trends are bringing more commuters back to downtown post-pandemic. In addition, transportation agencies, local advocates, and companies put together a thoroughly coordinated bike to wherever day, filled with  "energizer stations" throughout the city that motivated riders. These energizer stations proved particularly effective, offering cyclists refreshments, swag, and the motivational boost of community support along their routes. Over 600 riders visited an energizer station sponsored by Bay Wheels.

The Ebike Revolution

Perhaps the most striking trend in this year's data is the explosive growth of ebike usage:

  • Over 1 million ebike rides were recorded across the country during Bike to Work Week
  • Ebike usage skyrocketing by 133% over the past two years and for the second consecutive year, ebikes represented the majority of Bike to Work Week trips

Bike to Work Week brought city mayors together, and they have a preference for ebikes too! Mayor Lurie of San Francisco was spotted riding an ebike into the office (in concert with a Bay Wheels ebike rider!). And on the other side of the country, Mayor Wu of Boston was spotted riding a next-generation ebike on the Bluebikes system!

The ebike revolution has fundamentally changed the cycling landscape, making longer commutes feasible and bringing cycling within reach for people of varying fitness levels and ages.

Looking Forward

The impressive growth in ridership during Bike to Work Week signals a continued interest in the role shared micromobility plays in delivering a sustainable, reliable form of transportation in cities. The data clearly shows that cycling is no longer just a recreational activity or the domain of the most dedicated enthusiasts—it's becoming a mainstream transportation choice for everyday commuting. With the environmental, health, and economic benefits of cycling, this growth represents a positive step toward more sustainable and livable cities.

As we look toward next year's Bike to Work Week, it will be fascinating to see if these impressive growth trends continue and how cities might further adapt to accommodate and encourage the cycling revolution that's clearly underway.
