Same bikes, new name: Bay Wheels becomes Lyft Bike

After nearly a decade of bikeshare in the Bay Area, Bay Wheels is officially becoming Lyft Bike. This next chapter is backed by a five-year contract extension with regional partners and follows 30% growth in 2025. It reinforces a shared commitment to reliable, station-based bikeshare designed around the needs of cities and riders. Over the next five years, the system will add 1,000 new bikes and more than 60 new stations, including 16 charging stations. Lyft Bike will continue serving San Francisco, Berkeley, Emeryville, Daly City, Oakland, and San Jose, with the same bikes, stations, and memberships riders know today.

Data-driven planning for better bikeshare networks: A new white paper by Toronto’s York University and Lyft Urban Solutions

A recent simulation study by York University in collaboration with Lyft Urban Solutions found that station-anchored hybrid networks capture the largest share of potential ridership in every market studied. Using the city of Hamburg, Germany, as a case study, the research also shows that where infrastructure is placed matters just as much as the model itself: with stations playing a critical role in high-demand locations and out-of-station parking zones extending network reach in lower-density areas. The findings highlight how data-driven planning can help cities build more efficient, adaptable bikeshare networks.

When big events drive record ridership

Big games bring big crowds, and last month, they also brought record bikeshare ridership. During global sports tournaments, two of our US-operated systems reached new highs:

• In New York, Citi Bike broke its weekly record with 1.347 million rides.
• In San Francisco, Lyft Bike set new daily and weekly records, reaching 21,800 rides in one day and more than 140,000 in a week.

These milestones show how bikeshare can help cities keep people moving when major events bring increased demand.

Bikeshare highlights from around the world 

• 🇪🇸 In Zaragoza, Bizi recorded more than 11.3 million rides in its first year of full operation, averaging over 20,900 trips per day, and 10 daily rides per bike.
• 🇪🇸 Bicimad is now officially in operation in Pozuelo de Alarcón, following the expansion announced earlier this year. The service includes 30 stations and 370 bikes, marking the first time Bicimad has expanded beyond the capital’s city limits.
• 🇺🇸 As Divvy surpassed 1 million monthly rides for the first time this July, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, CDOT, and Lyft announced the opening of new Divvy stations and additional service improvements to expand access across the city.
• 🇨🇦 Québec City’s àVélo continues its strong growth, reaching more than 1.3 million rides halfway through the 2026 season, up 28% year over year. July 15 alone accounted for 19,770 rides in a single day.
• 🇨🇦 Bike Share Toronto has officially surpassed 4 million rides in 2026, marking another major milestone as riders continue to use the system for commuting, transit connections, errands, and exploring the city.
• 🇺🇸 POGOH has secured $1.5 million in funding to support its first expansion beyond Pittsburgh. The investment will help bring up to 17 new stations to neighboring communities, marking the next step in POGOH’s vision for a regional bikeshare network.
