We were back at Micromobility Europe in Berlin this year for its biggest edition yet. The event brings together global leaders in micromobility, including founders, city planners, manufacturers, and startups, for several days of meetings, discussions, and presentations that will undoubtedly shape what's next.

Europe is a region we're deeply invested in. Lyft Urban Solutions now powers 18 bikeshare systems across Europe, with more than 40,000 bikes and 2,900 stations in cities including London, Madrid, Bilbao, Sibiu, and Clermont-Ferrand. Rider demand for electric mobility continues to grow, and today 56% of our European fleet is electric, supported by over 1,700 charging stations across these networks.

A sector with forward momentum

Prabin Joel Jones opened day one by tracing the industry's recent growth, pointing to better vehicles, rising public ridership, and more sophisticated business models as the drivers behind the sector's success. The consensus was clear: micromobility is thriving, a sentiment that set the tone for the event's theme, Forward Momentum

Horace Dediu, co-founder of Micromobility Industries, added that the sector still reaches only a small share of people globally. With urban populations set to grow rapidly, he said, now is the moment to push product development and operational efficiency to the forefront.

The invisible tech stack

Michael Frumin, VP of Technology at Lyft Urban Solutions, joined moderator Johan Høgåsen-Hallesby (Co-founder, Beta Mobility), Vikas Gupta (CPTO, Dott), and Anders Ivarsson (CTO, Voi Technology) to explore the technology layer powering micromobility at scale. Michael opened by framing what makes LUS stand out: the company designs and builds its own bikes and stations, develops its own operations platform, then operates some of the largest bikeshare systems in North America. The conversation moved through how station-based infrastructure creates built-in accountability, and how software now directs every field decision from rebalancing to battery swaps, controlling which bikes are available to riders before any problem reaches the street. A recurring theme: purpose-built simplicity can often outperform high-tech complexity.

Mobility that opens the city

Tobias Griesmeier, Senior Policy Manager at Lyft Urban Solutions, joined Karen Vancluysen (Secretary General, Polis Network), Pedro Homem de Gouveia (Senior Policy Advisor, Polis Network), and Espen Strand Henriksen (Business Developer, Kolumbus) for a panel on transport poverty, the inability to access adequate, affordable mobility options. Tobias described how transport poverty often surfaces in low-income neighborhoods historically cut off from bus and metro networks. Across LUS-operated systems in the U.S., income-eligible program members take 44% more rides on average than standard members. Physical keys at stations also allow riders without smartphones to unlock bikes. For many of these riders, he argued, the impact goes beyond commuting.

As Tobias put it: “Mobility is not only going to work and back. It opens the city”.

On the ground in Berlin

Just outside the venue, attendees and sponsors got to test ride our latest Lyft Urban Solutions bikes on the track. These two models are designed to deliver a best-in-class rider experience. Equipped with a rear-wheel immobilization system for flexible parking, enhanced safety features, and real-time connectivity, they’re engineered to meet the evolving demands of both cities and riders, while pushing the standard for what a modern bikeshare system can offer.

In the latest edition of Micromobility Magazine, distributed to all attendees upon their entry, is the Lyft Urban Solutions article “Three forces shaping the next decade of bikeshare” by Caroline Samponaro. Discover the statistics behind why station-based systems drive ridership, and stay tuned for the online publication.

Our team left Berlin energized by the conversations and the connections, and more committed than ever to continue building on this momentum. We'd love to keep the conversation going, so come find us at our upcoming events and reach out to the team members you meet.
