Lyft Urban Solutions is proud to announce the launch of Bilbaobizi, Bilbao’s next-generation, fully electric bikeshare system in Spain. This new network improves access for thousands of riders across the coastal city and uses innovative smart technology to power this growing, incredibly sustainable hub.

Sponsored by Iberdrola and operated by our long-standing partner Serveo, this bikeshare system replaces a legacy network, expanding the scope of both the fleet and the geographical coverage area. This system features 790 electric bikes supported by 48 smart charging stations, all designed to enhance the micromobility experience by making it easier and faster to use.

Flexible, rider-first infrastructure that’s gone fully electric

Bilbaobizi’s 100% electric fleet delivers reliable performance and eliminates the physical strain that can discourage some potential riders from using the network,  making the system more accessible to a wider range of users.

Additionally, the automatic charging at stations throughout the city sidesteps the need for manual battery swapping, reducing emissions associated with support van usage and streamlining operations.

Bilbaobizi’s ease of use extends to the mobile app experience. Powered by our latest technology, the app allows riders to quickly locate and unlock bikes, manage their account, and even enable a mid-ride pause, offering them greater flexibility. With widespread adoption in cities like Zaragoza and Rivas, Lyft Urban Solutions’ mobile app interface is truly changing how residents and tourists alike experience vibrant urban centers.

The latest in a growing global movement in Bilbao and beyond

Bilbao’s solution is the latest in a string of Spanish success stories for Lyft Urban Solutions' bikeshare networks. This upgraded system represents our seventh deployment in the country and the third to move to a completely electric fleet, succeeding launches in Madrid and Zaragoza. Globally, it’s our eighth fleet that consists only of ebikes, joining cities like Dubai, Medina, and Quebec City in embracing this eco-conscious movement.

This is a clear reflection of the accelerating shift toward electric mobility.  This trend is evident in our Bicicoruña network, where 68% of 2024 rides were made on ebikes despite representing just 40% of the fleet’s vehicle inventory. In Romania’s Moinesti system, ebikes comprised roughly a third of the fleet but accounted for 75% of all rides in the same period. In peak months, electric bikes hit more than 18 daily rides per vehicle!

Leading Spain’s shift to electric micromobility

In Spain, Lyft Urban Solutions has deployed over 22,000 bikes across mobility networks, with more than 77% of the fleet now electric, driving a major shift toward innovative urban transport. We’re proud to support tens of thousands of daily rides across some of Europe’s highest-performing bikeshare networks. Those include Bicimad in Madrid, which saw a 95% ridership jump in our first year of partnership.

And there’s more to come. The next phase of Bilbaobizi’s growth is on the horizon for 2026, bringing bikeshare to even more neighborhoods and residents. Once complete, the system will be equipped with 1,250 fully electric bikes and 68 smart charging stations, further strengthening Bilbao’s commitment to accessible, sustainable transportation.

Bilbaobizi marks a bold new chapter in Bilbao’s transportation story, one that’s cleaner, smarter, and more accessible for all. With each launch, Lyft Urban Solutions reaffirms its commitment to building a more sustainable, rider-centric future for cities worldwide.
