Lyft Urban Solutions has been awarded a contract by Guadalajara's Metropolitan Agency of Infrastructure Services for Mobility (AMIM) to power a major expansion of Mi Bici, one of Latin America's most successful bikeshare systems. Delivered in partnership with BKT Bici Pública, the system's operator, this investment will bring our best-in-class ebikes and charging infrastructure to a program that, until now, operated exclusively with pedal bikes.
Since its launch in 2014, Mi Bici has delivered more than 36 million rides, becoming an essential component of the Guadalajara metropolitan area’s public transportation network. This expansion prepares the system for its next chapter. Electric bikes and charging infrastructure will make cycling easier across the metropolitan area, enabling longer trips, reaching new riders, and supporting the city's long-term mobility goals.
As Guadalajara prepares to host four soccer matches of one of the world's most-watched sporting events, this expansion will showcase world-class sustainable mobility on a global stage while delivering improved transportation for residents and visitors alike. Key innovations include:
Rolling out between April and June 2026, the investment will grow Mi Bici to 470 stations and more than 5,000 bikes total, improving system performance and availability across the metropolitan area.
Beyond major system upgrades, this strategic investment is aligned with the city's vision for the future. The expansion directly supports the official Mi Bici Master Plan, a 15-year strategy developed by BKT Bici Pública in collaboration with FIAP, Euroclima, AMIM, and IMEPLAN. The plan sets ambitious targets: electrify 50% of the fleet by 2030 and expand coverage to 215 square kilometers by 2040.
By reducing barriers related to distance and terrain, the deployment of nearly 1,000 ebikes will make the system more accessible to a broader range of riders, helping to close the gender gap in bikeshare participation. The result: a more sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready urban mobility network for Guadalajara.
"We are excited to take MiBici to the next level and position it in the Mexican market as a benchmark for urban mobility through its electrification and modernization. We are confident that this evolution will have a multiplier effect on its use: it will attract new users, increase the number of trips per bike, and expand its presence to more neighborhoods across the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. In addition to strengthening the system, it will help transform the city and its infrastructure, consolidating the bicycle as a cleaner, emission-free mode of transportation that is more agile and, now, more inclusive as well, " said Mario Delgado, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of BKT Bici Pública

Mi Bici is setting a new standard. With this expansion, the program will become Mexico's first dock-based bikeshare network to operate a mixed fleet of pedal and electric bikes. Lyft's integrated hardware and software platform makes this possible. As a leading bikeshare provider, powering more than 55 programs across 14 countries, Lyft brings a proven track record in deploying electric bikeshare for cities. The technology, designed in San Francisco and informed by that expertise, delivers seamless in-dock charging, reduced operational costs, and optimized bike availability.
At the center of Mi Bici’s transformation is the Lyft Astro electric bike, which brings proven performance, reliability, and rider-focused innovation to Guadalajara's streets. Designed specifically for bikeshare systems supported by robust charging station networks, the Lyft Astro delivers smart electric assistance powered by a 250W motor that automatically adapts to terrain and rider behavior. Its responsive handling, comfortable form factor, and built-in LCD screen provide riders with real-time trip information and confident control. For riders, a high-visibility reflective frame, integrated front and rear LED lighting, and hydraulic disk brakes ensure safe riding day or night. For operators, built-in diagnostics and sensors enable real-time failure detection, reducing downtime and simplifying maintenance.
The Lyft Astro ebike will be supported by a fully integrated in-dock charging station network, composed of Lyft Pillar docking points and Lyft Obelisk kiosks. The stations will look like stations Guadalajara riders have grown to love in the Mi Bici program, but will enable ebikes to be charged while they are parked. At the heart of each charging station, the Lyft Obelisk kiosk manages grid connectivity and energy distribution for charging ebikes, while offering riders a built-in neighborhood map for wayfinding. Complementing the Lyft Obelisk, the Lyft Pillar docks are built for durability and reliability. Informed by insights from hundreds of millions of trips worldwide, each dock features our innovative locking mechanism that ensures smooth bike pickups and returns for riders, maintaining full functionality even during power outages. These proven in-dock charging solutions will keep ebikes charged and ready, eliminating the need for battery-swapping vehicles, and significantly reduce operational costs and carbon impact.
Critically, all new equipment will be 100% compatible with Mi Bici's existing infrastructure. New electric bikes will dock seamlessly at existing Mi Bici stations, while Mi Bici pedal bikes will be able to park at charging stations, ensuring an uninterrupted and improved rider experience throughout the expansion.
Rounding out the upgrade is a new rider mobile app that streamlines sign-up and payment with an intuitive interface and integrated Apple Pay and Google Pay.
"Guadalajara is writing the future of sustainable transportation in Latin America. With 960 Lyft Astro ebikes and the region's first dock-based charging station network, Mi Bici will offer both existing and new riders unprecedented freedom to move across the city – whether climbing hills, connecting neighborhoods, or commuting longer distances. This expansion demonstrates the power of long-term partnerships and shared vision. Together with AMIM and BKT, we're excited to deploy infrastructure that will serve Guadalajara for decades to come, especially as the city prepares to welcome the global soccer community," said Michael Brous, Head of Lyft Urban Solutions.
This expansion builds on more than a decade of collaboration. AMIM, the Metropolitan Agency of Infrastructure Services for Mobility, is leading the transformation in strategic partnership with Lyft Urban Solutions and BKT Bici Pública, with strong support from Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro.
Since 2014, Lyft Urban Solutions has served as AMIM's trusted technology partner for Mi Bici, delivering the infrastructure and technology that has supported the system's growth across the metropolitan area. Working alongside BKT Bici Pública, Mi Bici's experienced system operator, this partnership combines AMIM's vision with proven operational expertise and cutting-edge technology.
Antonio Martín del Campo Sáenz, General Administrator of the Metropolitan Agency of Infrastructure for Mobility (AMIM), noted that this new technology will make Jalisco a reference point in Latin America.
"We're committed to more sustainable, accessible transportation that will lead our state into the future—offering residents electric, sustainable transportation with cutting-edge technology and another option for getting around the city by bicycle."
Lyft Urban Solutions' experience, powering more than 55 bikeshare systems across 14 countries, and Lyft’s global mobility platform, which operates across six continents and in thousands of cities, bring proven expertise to support AMIM's ambitious growth targets and ensure Mi Bici continues to evolve as a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in Latin America. We are proud to support AMIM and the Government of Jalisco's vision for sustainable, accessible, and future-ready urban mobility.
